Positive Reviews
positive:
Special lodging arrangements
Guests like the unique experience of sleeping in old jail cells that have been remodeled as guests rooms. They still sport the original jail bars on the door and stone walls. Parts of the hostel are kept in their historic state. The rooms are clean and pretty basic but most guests felt they received good value for their money.
positive:
Great location
The hostel is right in downtown Ottawa near the thriving neighbourhood of Beyard Market, making it easy to reach restaurants, shops and night time entertainment. Many guests loved that they were in walking distance to many attractions such as Parliament hill. A bus stop is nearby, making it easy to use public transportation if you don't want to walk.
positive:
Staff is very friendly
Guests loved the customer service at this hostel. They received friendly service and plenty of help in ideas for activities, recommendations for restaurants and giving directions.
Negative Reviews
negative:
No elevator
Guests who had rooms on the upper floors were not happy about the lack of an elevator. The building has nine levels, and if you are on one of the top floors you will have to walk a lot of stairs.
negative:
Warm in the summer
Air conditioning in this building is limited and does not extend to individual air conditioning in the rooms. Many guests felt hot in the summer. The hotel does provide fans, but they only give a little relief.
negative:
Noisy environment
Due to the fact that your doors are not made of wood but jail cell doors with a privacy screen, guests heard a lot of the noise from other guests. The hallways reflect a lot of noise from walking. The hostel provides free earplugs, but if you are sensitive to noise this might not be your first choice for lodging.
